How I Clean My Make-up Brushes

I've read a lot of blog posts recently about how you all clean and keep your make-up brushes, so I decided to do my own. I've recently realised how important it is to clean your make-up brushes and now I can actually see a difference in my make-up when they're clean. There's probably a million ways to do this, but I find that this is a simple and low cost way to get lovely, clean brushes again.

I don't use anything really fancy like brush cleaners, just plain old baby shampoo. You can't really tell that its baby shampoo from the picture as the label has come off the bottle, but it is just Johnson's. You can buy this from any drug store or supermarket for about £3.00, so its totally cheap and a really good thing to have handy. The one I have is about a year old, so I really do need to repurchase some more as I don't really know if it works as well after a while.

Again, I don't really do anything special when cleaning my brushes. I start off by wetting and rubbing the brushes against the palm on my hand to loosen any make-up. Obviously wash your hands really well before hand, or this will just be a totally pointless exercise. I then apply a tiny bit of baby shampoo to the palm of my hand, and rub the brushes in a circular motion into it. You'll see that the make-up comes away from the brush and into your hand, or in my case in clumps into the sink. This is an absolute pain because we have a white sink and this leaves awful foundation streaks, so be sure to give your skin a good wash after.

I do this until the tops of the brushes are white again, which is such a satisfying feeling, I love having clean brushes. I then tap off the excess water, dry the handle and place the brushes to air dry on a towel. I always place my towel on the floor in front of my radiator, just in the hope that it dries the brushes a little quicker. Leave them there and just wait now... I often swirl them on the towel to get rid of any make-up remains or shampoo bits that might be left on the brush.

All done! Amazingly clean brushes again. I do have to admit I was never massive on cleaning my brushes, purely because I was lazy, but I've realised how much it makes a difference. I try to do mine every two weeks or just when I can see a build up of excess make-up.

How do you wash your make-up brushes? What tips would you give me?

  1. I normally use soap, which probably isn't the best for my brushes, so I will give this a go. xxx

    1. I'm not too sure about soap lovely, I know anti-bacterial is very good for killing germs and things. I find that baby shampoo just brings off the make-up really quickly... plus they're so soft after! :)

    1. It is such an easy and cheap way to clean them :) I did it the other day and the brushes are so white and clean - not a bit of foundation left! Thank you for your comment :)

  3. Real Techniques brushes come up excellently after washing! I hadn't washed my stippling brush in ages though and it took several attempts. I use either shampoo samples from hotels or normal shampoo and it seems to work well

    1. Oh wow I never thought of using shampoo. Does it work well? Maybe I'll have to give it a go next time. I try to wash my every week just because I love how my make-up goes on when they're nice and clean. I probably use my buffing brush the most so I tend to make sure its always clean :)
